Saanich Police Cruiser Slams Into Vehicle To End Early-Morning Chase

The Canadian Press, 04 Aug, 2015 12:23 PM
VICTORIA — A section of a busy Vancouver Island highway connecting Victoria and Swartz Bay was closed for hours on Tuesday morning when Saanich police brought a vehicle pursuit to a crashing end.

Highway 17, the Patricia Bay Highway, was not expected to reopen until at least mid-morning, following the pre-dawn crash.

Saanich Police wouldn't offer much detail but say a marked cruiser was following a car through that Victoria suburb when officers began to suspect the driver intended to hurt someone.

A police spokesman says the driver would not pull over voluntarily, so the decision was made to make "intentional contact."

The pursuit ended a short time later when the cruiser rammed the suspect vehicle.

No one was hurt and the driver, who was alone in the car, was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act. (
