  • Rollover vehicle catches fire in Nelson

A man is lucky to be alive after his vehicle went off the road in Nelson, flipped over and caught fire.

Police say the motorist was driving yesterday morning when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a large rock.

The car then flipped over on its roof and caught fire, and the driver was unconscious when a passerby pulled the man to safety.

The 20-year-old driver is in hospital with serious injuries but police say he "surely" would have died had he not been pulled from the burning wreckage.

Veteran British Columbia legislator Mike Bernier will run in the fall provincial election as an independent instead of joining several former BC United candidates in running under the B.C. Conservatives banner. Bernier says he did not want to "bend" his morals and values by running with the provincial Conservatives, describing some of the party's candidates as holding views that are "anti-women's rights, anti-climate change" and "anti-First Nations."
