Road Safety Improvements Coming To Popular B.C. Tourism Route Highway 20

    Road improvements are coming to a popular tourism route between Bella Coola and Anahim Lake.
     
    “This project will focus on rehabilitating a large stretch of Highway 20 in Bella Coola, as well as a section along Highway 20 in Anahim Lake,” Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone said.
     
    “This popular route has earned its formidable reputation due to the steep grades and roads that takes travellers from the high mountain plains of the Chilcotin to the wet and windy Bella Coola coast. These improvements will mean a safer journey for those travelling along the Chilcotin-Bella Coola highway.”
     
    Work has already started on the project, with approximately 28 kilometres of Highway 20 heading east from the Bella Coola government wharf now complete.
     
    The first five kilometres of resurfacing east of the Tatsquan Bridge to the 4 Mile Reserve will also include additional shoulder paving to accommodate local pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, local side roads and a 30-kilometre section on Highway 20 in the Anahim Lake area will also be resurfaced.
     
    “This is a remote and beautiful route,” said Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett. “Whether you’re heading to the Great Bear Rainforest or into the Chilcotin and Cariboo, these improvements will make the journey safer and smoother for all users.”
     
    Peter Bros. Construction Ltd. has been awarded the $6.2-million contract. Work has already started and is set to wrap up by the end of July, weather permitting.
