Road closures in effect in Surrey

Police in Surrey are investigating two separate collisions involving pedestrians -- including a fatal hit and run.

R-C-M-P say an 81-year-old man was hit and killed last night in the Strawberry Hill neighbourhood -- and they are appealing for dashcam footage of the area (at 120-A Street and 75-A Avenue) taken between 6:30 and 7 last night.

The second crash happened at about 8:15 this morning when a youth was hit and seriously injured while walking near the Fraser Highway, close to the Willowbrook shopping centre.

The driver remained at the scene and police hope witnesses can help them sort out what happened.

Fraser Highway eastbound is closed to traffic from 64 Avenue to 196 Street. The road closures will remain in effect for an undetermined amount of time while the scene is being processed.

The new law would require local governments to update zoning bylaws to permit multi-unit buildings on lots typically used for single-family detached homes. Vancouver police have conducted a series of raids of retail outlets as part of an investigation into the illegal sale of illicit psychedelic drugs including psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms. Officers searched three storefronts in Marpole, Mount Pleasant, and Strathcona, seizing a variety of controlled substances police believe were being bought and sold in bulk quantities to walk-in customers.

Batteries stolen from Vancouver Island

Mounties on Vancouver Island say thieves are making off with batteries from railway control boxes, causing an estimated 800-thousand dollars in damages and replacement costs. Police say the island-wide problem stretches from Langford to Comox Valley and multiple thefts have occurred between August to October.
