RCMP say missing Japanese tourist planned to trek into bush and disappear

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 04 Nov, 2014 11:05 AM

YELLOWKNIFE — RCMP in Yellowknife say a missing Japanese tourist is presumed dead.

Mounties believe Atsumi (at-SOO'-mee) Yoshikubo (yosh-EE'-koo-boh) had a plan to disappear into the wilderness alone.

They say she also took steps to avoid being found.

The 45-year-old was last seen 13 days ago walking along a highway outside the city.

Staff at a hotel reported her missing after she failed to check out of her room.

Police and civilian volunteers, with the help of dogs and aircraft, searched the area for about a week.

RCMP say the search has been stopped, but officers will continue to investigate leads, with the hope of finding her remains. The coroner's office has officially taken over the case.
