RCMP say missing Japanese tourist planned to trek into bush and disappear

    YELLOWKNIFE — RCMP in Yellowknife say a missing Japanese tourist is presumed dead.

    Mounties believe Atsumi (at-SOO'-mee) Yoshikubo (yosh-EE'-koo-boh) had a plan to disappear into the wilderness alone.

    They say she also took steps to avoid being found.

    The 45-year-old was last seen 13 days ago walking along a highway outside the city.

    Staff at a hotel reported her missing after she failed to check out of her room.

    Police and civilian volunteers, with the help of dogs and aircraft, searched the area for about a week.

    RCMP say the search has been stopped, but officers will continue to investigate leads, with the hope of finding her remains. The coroner's office has officially taken over the case.
