The RCMP is conducting an investigation into a Muslim relief organization that federal auditors have accused of sending almost $15-million to the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.
The Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams raided the head office of the International Relief Fund for the Afflicted and Needy- Canada (IRFAN- Canada), in Mississauga on Monday, along with a private residence in Montreal.
"An extensive amount of documentary evidence along with sorted media, money and other records were seized," the RCMP mentioned in a statement.
Although the organization was added to Ottawa's list of banned terrorist organizations Thursday, the announcement was only made Tuesday.
IRFAN-Canada reportedly raised funds for Hamas between 2005 and 2009, despite Canada stating it illegal to finance Hamas in Canada since 2002.
Meanwhile, Yavar Hameed, an Ottawa based lawyer remarked on the developments of the case saying IRFAN did not have an opportunity to respond and was not aware that a terrorist listing was in the works.
Hameed further told media that there is no evidence the group did any direct funding of Hamas.
