RCMP say they've put significant resources toward investigating the death of a person found after they responded to a fire by a rural road east of Calgary.

Mounties were called early on Wednesday morning to a report of a fire on the side of a rural road in Rocky View County.

Once the fire was out, officers found a body.

Police say they believe it was a targeted attack and that there's no danger to the public.

RCMP say the major crimes unit is leading the investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for today in Calgary.

"We have a significant number of resources focused on apprehending the individual(s) responsible and protecting the public," RCMP said in a Thursday release.

Police are asking for any dashcam footage from the area around Township Road 233 near Highway 791 in Rocky View County, or from Highway 560 west of the Glenmore Trail and Stoney Trail overpass.

Police on southern Vancouver Island say they’ve arrested almost as many impaired drivers in the first eight months of this year than they did in 2023 in a concerning trend of people getting behind the wheel while drunk or on drugs.
