Quebec Rejects Idea Of Selling Marijuana In Government-Run Liquor Stores

The Canadian Press, 11 Feb, 2016 10:49 AM
QUEBEC — The Quebec government is rejecting the idea of selling pot in provincially run liquor stores.

Finance Minister Carlos Leitao says he has no intention of integrating marijuana into the sales provided by the province's liquor authority.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said his government will legalize and strictly regulate marijuana and will work with local authorities to come up with distribution methods, which could vary from province to province.

Trudeau's comments about getting the provinces involved in distribution have sparked suggestions that pot could be sold out of government-run liquor stores.

Independent stores in Quebec can sell beer and some types of wine, but the province's liquor commission has a monopoly on the sale of hard liquor.

Leitao wouldn't comment today on the federal government's role in selling marijuana in Quebec.

He said he will focus on worrying about matters of provincial jurisdiction.
