Quebec's independent police review board is investigating after an alleged machete-wielding man was shot and killed after a car chase with police.
The review board says the car chase through the streets of Quebec City and nearby Levis began at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
City and provincial police were part of the chase, during which the 39-year-old suspect allegedly threw an axe out of his car.
The review board says police tried to use road spikes to stop the car but were unsuccessful, and eventually brought the suspect's vehicle to a halt by ramming it with a police cruiser.
The suspect allegedly exited the vehicle wielding a machete and hit an officer in the arm, causing minor injuries.
At least two officers then opened fire on the suspect.
Nine review board investigators are on the case.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead in hospital.
