Punjabi residents make their way via a car ralley from Surrey to Vancouver Consulate in support of farmers in India

  • Punjabi residents make their way via a car ralley from Surrey to Vancouver Consulate in support of farmers in India

WATCH: "If I am not here, I will be in Delhi standing with farmers," said a protester at the #kisaan #morcha #car Rally in Surrey, BC, Canada. BC based Punjabi expats are throwing their support behind the farmers in India who have been holding protests in New Delhi in opposition to agriculture bills brought upon the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

As a result a car rally took place Wednesday December 2nd that began Surrey at the Strawberry Hill Complex and made its way to the Indian Consulate in Downtown Vancouver. The Punjab Kisaan Morcha Car Rally rally organizers say the farmers biggest concern is that the sale and success of their crops will be left at the hands of large corporations, which will impact the incomes of smaller producers.

The car rally kicked off at noon in front of Cineplex in the parking lot of Strawberry Hill Plaza with a police presence, media, hundreds of people with signs saying I support Farmers, and a ton of cars with orange flags. Darpan Magazine's social media host Ish Sharma spoke to people as to why they want to be part of this rally and what the issue means to them.
