Punjab To Create Dedicated Fund For Art, Culture

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 05 Sep, 2014 03:35 PM
The Punjab government will set up a dedicated fund for the welfare of litterateurs, dramatists, folk singers, artistes and other personalities from the fields of language, art and culture, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced here Friday.

Pointing out that leading personalities from these fields had contributed immensely to Punjabi culture, he said: "I am deeply anguished to see several families of these iconic figures, who left indelible mark on the canvas of rich heritage of Punjabi art and culture, were now leading a life in penury and extreme difficult circumstances."

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the seventh All India Punjabi Conference at Punjabi University here, 80 km from Chandigarh, Badal said that he would ensure that the next generation of these noted stars of yesteryears could lead a life with honour and dignity.

"It is the bounden duty of the state government not only to preserve the cultural heritage, but also to safeguard the interests of the next of their kin," he said.

He said that with their indomitable spirit, Punjabis had established their identity across the globe.

He said that there was a need to document the achievements of eminent Punjabis in varied fields not only in the country but across the world by publishing a directory so that they could be felicitated.
