Province And City Pick Up Tab For 60 Temporary Shelter Beds In Vancouver

    VANCOUVER — The provincial government and City of Vancouver are splitting the $250,000 bill to create 60 more shelter beds in the city.
     
    A release from the Ministry Responsible for Housing says the two levels of government will each provide $125,000 to fund the temporary winter shelter spaces.
     
    There will be approximately 230 temporary shelter spaces available every night in Vancouver, once the new beds open in early January.
     
    Three non-profit groups,  United Gospel Mission, Portland Hotel Society and Directions, will operate the spaces, which will remain open until the end of March, 2016.
     
    Ten spaces will be created for youth at a location on Burrard Street.
     
    A further 20 spaces for men and 30 spaces for men and women will be added at separate sites on the city's Downtown Eastside.
