Prime Minister Stephen Harper Continues Western Swing In Saskatchewan Today

The Canadian Press, 24 Jul, 2015 01:17 PM
KELOWNA, B.C. — Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues a swing through western Canada today, stopping in Regina to meet with Premier Brad Wall at the Saskatchewan legislature.

Harper joined B-C Premier Christy Clark on Thursday afternoon to meet crews who have been fighting an out of control wildfire near West Kelowna.

Both B-C and Saskatchewan have been ravaged by wildfires this year and Harper says he's spoken with both premiers about improving how the blazes are fought.

Clark says she and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall have both asked the federal government to support provinces fighting fires through an enhanced military presence and a national cache of technology.

While in Saskatchewan today, Harper may find himself having to address the Senate — a subject he has tried to avoid in recent months.

Premier Brad Wall has been the most vocal of the premiers in calling for the scandal-plagued upper chamber to be abolished.

There are more than 20 vacant Senate seats and Harper's office has not said when he will fill them.
