MIRAMICHI, N.B. — A contract has been awarded to build a new federal payroll centre in northern New Brunswick.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement today in Miramichi, where he said one facility will be responsible for consolidating the public service's payroll system in an effort to save money.
Harper said the federal payroll centre will provide services for employees in 46 federal departments and agencies.
Nearly five years ago, Harper announced the creation of a civil servant payroll centre in the city to make up for layoffs of about 200 federal workers employed at the Canadian Firearms Centre.
That facility administered the long-gun registry before it was abolished.
About 550 people now work at two temporary payroll centre offices in Miramichi.
