Port Moody House Fire That Killed Mother Of 6 Now A Homicide Investigation

Darpan, 14 Jul, 2016 01:45 PM
On July 10, 2016, just before 1:30 pm the Port Moody Police responded to a domestic dispute in progress at a residence in the 3300 block of Dewdney Trunk Road.

Upon arrival, the residence was engulfed in flames and 2 adults remained inside. The Port Moody Police Officers who attended the scene acted quickly and retrieved the occupants of the home. The Port Moody Fire Department was called to assist and the fire was contained.

An adult female was located inside the residence suffering from extensive burns to her body. She was immediately transported to hospital, however, she succumbed to her injuries just after 6:00pm.

An adult male, identified as the deceased’s husband, was arrested at the scene. He has since been charged with second degree murder and two (2) counts of arson causing bodily harm. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 18, 2016.

The couple have six children ranging from the age of 5-18 years old. Five of the children were home during the domestic dispute and fire. Prior to first responders attending the scene, the children managed to collectively escape the fire and exited the home from the second floor.

This incident is one that is tragic beyond words. Despite the intensity of the fire, the children, with assistance from the general public, managed to escape the burning home with minimal physical injuries. Thank you to the public who assisted with this rescue, says Staff Sergeant Jennifer Pound.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team will be working in partnership with the Port Moody Police Department. The scene will continue to be processed throughout the day and witnesses are being sought.

The next-of-kin notification has been completed. The name of the accused and the victim will not be released by IHIT at this time so as to protect the identity of the children.

Police are in the process of doing neighbourhood canvassing and collecting any video surveillance footage. There are many photos and videos that the public have taken of the scene during the time of the fire which may assist police in this homicide investigation. IHIT is asking anyone who has photos/video on their devices to contact our information line at 1-877-551-4448.
