Police To March Ahead Of Today's Funeral For B.C. Mountie Killed In Crash

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 12 Apr, 2016 10:16 AM
LANGFORD, B.C. — A public funeral will be held near Victoria today for RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett who was killed a week ago when her cruiser was hit broadside by a pickup truck.

The regimental ceremony will start with a procession of uniformed law enforcement officers down the Island Highway before the 2 p.m. service.

The service will take place at the Q Centre arena, but police anticipate a large crowd and have also arranged for a public viewing at the nearby Westhills Stadium.

The head of RCMP on Vancouver Island, Chief Supt. Ray Bernoties, says the force has been humbled by the outpouring of support, and the countless thoughtful notes, emails and gestures received since the death of their colleague.

Beckett, who was 32 years old, was an 11-year member of the force and leaves behind a husband and two young children.

The other driver involved in the crash wasn't hurt and was release from custody Wednesday without charge.
