Police issue alert for armed suspect in Calgary killings of woman and her father

  • Police issue alert for armed suspect in Calgary killings of woman and her father

Police issued an emergency alert Monday in the search for an armed and dangerous suspect in a double homicide in Calgary.

Insp. Lee Wayne with the major crimes unit said 38-year-old Benedict Kaminski was wanted in the killings. He urged residents to be vigilant and not open their doors to strangers.

Kaminski is believed to be driving a black 2022 Nissan Pathfinder.

"His whereabouts (are) unknown," Wayne told reporters, noting Kaminski's last known location was Sunday night in the northwest part of the city.

It was in that area, at two different locations, where a woman in her 30s and a man in his 70s were found dead.

The victims are believed to be Kaminski's wife and her father, said Wayne.

"We do very much think this was a targeted incident," Wayne said, adding that Kaminski was not previously known to police and has no prior criminal convictions.

Police described Kaminski as white, about six feet tall, with brown eyes, and brown and grey hair. He was last seen wearing a grey, red and white shirt.

The Pathfinder that Kaminski is believed to be driving has the Alberta licence plate CLN 5276.

Kaminski also has a gun licence and access to guns, and he may be in possession of a firearm, said Wayne.

"We've got a full gambit of police resources in place right now," he said of efforts to locate the suspect.

Wayne said the timeline of the killings was unclear. Officers were first called late Sunday to a home in the Kincora neighbourhood, where the man was found dead.

"We subsequently went to an address in Tuscany where there was additional concerns raised by family members, and that's where we found the female deceased," Wayne said.

He said other family members were safe and receiving support.

As police investigate, residents of Calgary and surrounding communities have been asked to call 911 if they spot Kaminski.

Autopsies for the victims are scheduled for Friday.
