Police arrest suspect in Calgary arson and extortion investigation

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Dec, 2024 12:26 PM
  • Police arrest suspect in Calgary arson and extortion investigation

Police in Calgary say they have made an arrest in an arson and extortion investigation.

A fire last month caused minor damage to a house in the Hillhurst neighbourhood northwest of downtown.

Police believed the fire was suspicious and say several nearby residents reported receiving threatening letters on their front steps demanding bitcoin transfers.

On Nov. 30, police said they were looking for a suspect, 21-year-old Finbar Hughes, and needed the public's help finding him.

He was wanted on several warrants, including causing damage by fire to a dwelling, extortion and possession of an incendiary material to commit arson.

Police say officers arrested Hughes on Wednesday.

There are about 65,000 of the ballots to count between tomorrow and Monday, which could solidify results from election night, or may even flip some ridings.
