PICS's President and CEO Satbir Singh Cheema Awarded Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee

Surrey, BC - Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society is pleased to announce that Satbir Singh Cheema, President and Chief Executive Officer of PICS Society has been awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award for outstanding service to the community.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award presentation took place on January 05, 2023 at the PICS Head Office where Honorable Member of Parliament, Ken Hardie was in attendance to present the award to PICS CEO and President Satbir Singh Cheema, alongside PICS Society’s Board of Directors, staff members and volunteers.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal is a commemorative medal created to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth ll’s accession in 1952. This award recognizes the contributions individuals and groups have made in a number of fields, including community service, business, arts and culture, sports, education and volunteerism.

Satbir Singh Cheema’s contributions to his community have not gone unnoticed. He has led many initiatives to identify service gaps in the community to be able to advance the mission of PICS. Under his leaderships and guidance PICS Society has expanded their services in many areas and locations, reaching and helping thousands of people.

Honorable Member of Parliament, Ken Hardie applauded Satbir Singh Cheema for his dedication and contributions to his community, “One word describes PICS, and it’s leader, Progressive. Some people see things as they are and ask why...others...Progressives like PICS, like Satbir Cheema see things as they could be and ask why not?” Satbir’s ability to recognize questions like these has allowed PICS and his contributions to the community to continue to grow and expand.

Satbir Singh Cheema thanked all of those in attendance and reiterated that in reality this is a recognition for the great work done by the staff, volunteers and Board members on a daily basis to make a positive difference in the lives of so many people. “I am truly humbled and grateful to have been nominated for this special recognition. I am accepting this award on behalf of my PICS family, and I am dedicating it to my mentor, coach, leader and role model - late Mr. Charanpal Gill, the Founder of PICS Society.”

It was determined early in the investigation that all of the occupants knew each other. Police took immediate action to locate the other remaining victim who was in the U-Haul van and allegedly being forcibly confined by a male and female suspect.

The suspects were captured on store surveillance cameras loitering at the entrance of City Lux Boutique, near Howe and Nelson streets on December 6 just after 4:30 a.m. One of the suspects used an object to shatter the glass on the window next to the front door. Both women then fled the area.
