Ontario Street Festival Cuts Ties With Petting Zoo After Public Complaints

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 07 Jun, 2016 12:15 PM
AURORA, Ont. — An Ontario petting zoo has been pulled from future street festivals after animal welfare officers responded to calls for a kangaroo that was left out in the sun on a hot day with little water and shade north of Toronto.

Law Insurance Brokers, which organizes a petting zoo for the Aurora Chamber of Commerce's annual street festival, says it has cut ties with Tiger Paw Exotics after complaints about the state of several animals on Sunday.

Jonathon Cole says he was at the Aurora Chamber of Commerce street festival on Sunday when his 10-year-old sister began crying after seeing a kangaroo curled up in a cage in the sun.

He says the kangaroo was foaming at the mouth and he thought the animal might be dying, so he says he spoke to the owner of Tiger Paw Exotics and also called the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The OSPCA says it attended and remedies were immediately taken to give shade to some of the animals, which also included rabbits and a porcupine.

Tiger Paw Exotics could not be immediately reached for comment.
