Ontario father and daughter doing well after life-saving liver transplant

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 12 Feb, 2015 10:43 AM

TORONTO — Doctors say an Ontario father and his daughter are doing well after undergoing life-saving liver transplant surgery on Tuesday.

Johanne Wagner says her husband, Michael Wagner, is her hero for giving part of his liver to Phuoc (FOO'-awk) — one of his three-year-old twin daughters who have a genetic disorder called Alagille syndrome.

It affects the girls' vital organs and they would die without a liver transplant.

Gary Levy, who runs the liver donor program at the Toronto General Hospital, says Michael Wagner is "doing extremely well" after having 10 to 15 per cent of his liver removed.

Phuoc is also recovering well, Levy says, following her seven-hour operation Tuesday.

Levy says Canadians should sign up to the registry to donate organs upon death in order to help those in need.
