One Ice Climber Dead, Two Others Missing Near Whistler: Police

The Canadian Press, 12 Jan, 2015 10:40 AM
PEMBERTON, B.C. — Police say one person is dead and two others have gone missing during an ice climbing expedition near Whistler, B.C.

RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton says the three were part of a group of climbers and skiers on Joffre Mountain in the Pemberton area.

He says they'd made plans to rendezvous at the end of the day, but when the climbers didn't arrive, the skiers went looking for them.

Knapton says it appears that one person fell and the other two are unaccounted for, but officers have not yet been able to access the area.

He says police received a report at about 1:30 a.m. and are  co-ordinating a search for the two climbers with rescue teams in Pemberton.

Police and the coroners' service are investigating the death, and no names have been released.
