One Home Damaged, 15 Others Isolated By Debris In B.C.'s Cariboo Region

The Canadian Press, 17 Jul, 2015 12:40 PM
LIKELY, B.C. — A landslide in British Columbia's central Interior had cut off about 15 homes and forced one family to seek refuge on the water.

Al Richmond of the Cariboo Regional District said early Thursday evening that the slide occurred near the community of Likely, which is about half way between Kamloops and Prince George.

Richmond said the family had to use a boat to escape.

"They're in the boat and they've been spotted and they're going to be spending time, the evening with some friends out there, so we know where they're going to be for the evening," said Richmond.

Richmond said the area is not stable and an RCMP helicopter was flying a geotechnical specialist from the Ministry of Transportation over the scene.

He said he won't know much about the impact of the slide until he sees the video shot from the helicopter.

The terrain is typical of the Cariboo region, he said, and is a combination of meadows, forests and steep banks in spots.
