One dead, three arrested after alleged hit-and-run in Surrey: RCMP

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 29 Jan, 2024 10:44 AM
  • One dead, three arrested after alleged hit-and-run in Surrey: RCMP

RCMP in Metro Vancouver say one man is dead and three people have been arrested after an alleged hit-and-run early Saturday morning.

A statement from Surrey RCMP says officers responded at 1:43 a.m. to a report of a pedestrian being struck along 105th Avenue, not far from City Hall.

They say police found the victim several blocks away suffering from severe injuries, and while paramedics came to help, the person was declared dead at the scene.

RCMP say witnesses described seeing a Ford Mustang strike the victim and leave without stopping, but police have since found and arrested its three occupants.

A subsequent statement says investigators are working to identify the male victim.

Police say the investigation is still in its early stages but they haven't ruled out alcohol or speed as contributing factors in the fatal crash.

Anyone with information, including dash camera footage from the area, is asked to contact Surrey RCMP.

More than 100 wildfires still not considered out after B.C.'s record wildfire season
More than 100 wildfires are still listed as burning in British Columbia thanks to a combination of a busy wildfire season, extreme drought and generally warmer and drier conditions through December. Forrest Tower of the BC Wildfire Service said that while it's not uncommon for some fires to burn through the winter, that number usually hovers around a couple dozen, not the 106 that were listed as active on New Year's Day.
