CALGARY — More than 250,000 people are lining downtown streets for the kickoff to the Calgary Stampede.

Two-time Olympic bobsled champion Kaillie Humphries says being the Stampede parade marshal is a dream come true.

Parade watchers were greeted by bright sunshine as fireworks went off to mark the start of the event.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau are all taking part.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley was a bit nervous at her first Stampede parade, saying it has been several years since she has been on a horse.
