Oil tanker adrift off coast of Nova Scotia after loss of steering

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 10 Dec, 2014 10:42 AM

HALIFAX — An oil tanker is adrift off the coast of Nova Scotia due to a loss of steering.

Jonathan Anthony, a spokesman for the ship's owner Teekay Corp., says the Australian Spirit encountered problems after it lost its steering Tuesday evening.

Anthony says the tanker was about 70 kilometres south-southeast of Halifax as of 1 p.m. local time and isn't near any other ships.

He says one tugboat has reached the vessel and another tugboat is en route from Halifax to assist.

Anthony says the crew on board is safe and they are working to correct the steering problem.

The coast guard is monitoring the situation.
