Officers to wear body cameras: VPD

Vancouver's Police Department says its officer will start using body-worn cameras in a six-month pilot project.

The department says in a statement that it believes the cameras will strengthen public safety and enhance trust and accountability.

It says it understands that people may have questions or concerns about the pilot and will be holding two virtual town hall meetings, including one tonight.

A coroner’s inquest into the police beating death of Myles Gray earlier this year recommended that Vancouver fit all its patrol officers with body cameras and the department said it would adopt the direction.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Chief Karen Fry says in a social media post that flames broke out before midnight Sunday prompting a three-alarm response to the large fire. The blaze involved five shops on 41st Avenue between Maple Street and East Boulevard, including two restaurants, a bakery, a yogurt shop and a vegetable market.

One man is in custody following a collision that sent two pedestrians to hospital yesterday afternoon. The pedestrians, a 24-year-old man and a 24-year old woman, were transported to hospital with serious injuries. A suspect was arrested in the area shortly after the collision.
