Nurses Fired, Replaced To Cut Costs At Abbotsford's Seniors' Facility, Menno Place

The Canadian Press, 30 Sep, 2015 01:34 PM
ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — More than two dozen nurses are being replaced in an attempt to cut costs at an Abbotsford, B.C., senior's care facility.

Menno Place CEO Karen Baillie says 29 registered nurses and licensed practical nurses have been let go at Menno Hospital because the facility is running a deficit.

The positions — eight part-time RNs, 11 full-time LPNs and 10 part-time LPNs — will be contracted out to a company that pays lower wages.

Baillie says all of the staff will be replaced with nurses who have the same qualifications.

BC Nurses' Union president Gayle Duteil says in a release that the move will be like breaking up a family for the 151 seniors living at the facility.

Baillie says the staffing change is necessary for Menno Place to provide sustainable care to seniors.
