Nunavut Calls Inquest Into Murky Circumstances Of 3-Month-Old Baby's Death

IANS, 16 Feb, 2016 12:22 PM
IQALUIT, Nunavut — Nunavut is calling an inquest into the murky circumstances of the death of a three-month-old boy in a remote Arctic community.

The inquiry into the 2012 death of Makibi Timilak could reveal more about a health system that has been heavily criticized in a previous review into the tragedy.

The baby died of sudden infant death syndrome.

The review found that nurses and health officials failed to follow procedures the night the baby died.

It said the death was glossed over and health staff were more concerned about protecting themselves than fixing problems.

The review spoke of a culture of fear in the Health Department that it says may be widespread throughout the territory.

A date for the inquest has not been set.
