Nuclear Safety Commission Specialists Go To Fort McMurray In Precautionary Move

The Canadian Press, 13 May, 2016 11:05 AM
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is sending two specialists to Fort McMurray to help emergency personnel check out radiological devices that may have been affected by the wildfire.

The commission says it got a request for assistance today from Alberta's provincial emergency operations centre.

Luc Sigouin, the commission's director of emergency management programs, stresses it is a precautionary move.

Sigouin says there are about 20 locations in the Fort McMurray area that have radiological devices.

He says the devices include radiography cameras used to check welding work in construction and portable gauges to measure the density of roadways — all of which should be in packaging that is fire-tested.

He says if a site was affected by the fire, the specialists will take radiation measurements to confirm if there's a leak.
