Noose Shown To Muslim Women: Edmonton Police Release Man Without Charges

Darpan News Desk, 08 Dec, 2016 01:37 PM
EDMONTON — Police in Edmonton have released a man who was taken into custody after two women wearing hijabs were taunted in what investigators have said could be a hate crime.

No charges have been laid, but police say the man is still a person of interest in the case.

The women were waiting at a light-rail transit station at the University of Alberta on Nov. 8 when they were approached by a man who pulled a rope out of his pocket, fashioned a noose and said "this is for you."

He then sang O Canada in front of the women, who captured what happened on a cellphone.

Investigators released a still taken from the video and on Tuesday took a man into custody.

Women wearing hijabs were handed flowers Wednesday as they waited at the station in what the gesture's organizer said was meant to send a message of acceptance.
