No Health Concerns Over Soil From Fort McMurray After Fire: Government Tests

The Canadian Press, 12 Jul, 2016 11:39 AM
EDMONTON — Government tests suggest a wildfire that levelled some neighbourhoods in the Alberta city of Fort McMurray left few contaminants behind in the soil.

Test results show several spots in burned-over neighbourhoods where hydrocarbons in the soil are above levels that could cause environmental damage.

But none of the levels was found to be high enough to hurt human health.

Test results of soil from unburned areas have already found those areas to be safe.

The test results don't apply to ash from the fire, which has already been found to be both caustic and high in toxic heavy metals.
