No charges against people who published name of child pornography victim

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 14 Nov, 2014 10:44 AM

HALIFAX — Police in Halifax say charges will not be laid against people who published the name of the victim in a high-profile child pornography case that was subject to a publication ban.

Investigators have wrapped up seven files of possible breaches of a court-ordered ban on the identity of the teen girl at the centre of the case.

Officers began looking into the matter in late September after receiving complaints that the victim's name was published by both citizens and the media.

Police say they considered whether the victim's name was used in connection with the child pornography charges as well as the context in which her name was used.

Based on that, they decided not to lay charges.

Police also say charges will not be laid after the first names of the two men accused in the same child pornography case were published.

One of the accused in the case was given a conditional discharge Thursday after pleading guilty to making child pornography.
