Newfoundland Woman In Hospital After Car Plunges Over Signal Hill Cliff

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 03 Apr, 2016 12:05 PM
  • Newfoundland Woman In Hospital After Car Plunges Over Signal Hill Cliff
Fire officials in Newfoundland say a woman is in hospital after she drove her car over a rocky cliff on the shores of St. John's, NL.

St. John's platoon fire chief Rick Mackey says the woman was driving the vehicle at the Signal Hill national historic site on Sunday around 8 a.m. when she somehow breached the gate.

Mackey says she either was thrown or jumped from the vehicle as it nosedived over the rugged cliff just below Cabot Tower, coming to rest about 90 metres down the 250-metre cliff.

He says the woman, the car's only occupant, landed roughly 45 metres down the cliff face and was rescued by emergency crews within about 20 minutes.

Mackey said the badly-damaged car, which was loosely teetering on the rocks in 100 km/h winds, has also been recovered.

He says during his 30 years as a firefighter, he's never seen anything like it.
