  • Newfoundland And Labrador Responds To Youth Overdose, Suicide Deaths
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Health officials in Newfoundland and Labrador are being urged to step up mental health services and teach students how to handle overdoses after the deaths last year of two young people.

The Justice Department announced its response today to two reports from the Child Death Review Committee involving separate fatalities last August and September.

One of the deaths involved a drug overdose, the other a youth who took their own life.

Ages of the deceased and other details were not released due to privacy concerns.

Recommendations include a review of drug abuse programs in schools, working with student councils on prevention and how to handle overdoses.

The Justice Minister also recommends health officials in Labrador create more mental health support for youth at risk of suicide.
