On November 23rd at approximately 3:41 pm, the New Westminster Police Department was called to a domestic assault incident in progress where it was learned the suspect had committed an assault and had fled the scene.

Minutes later, members located the suspect in the 700 block of 6th Street where he fled from police. NWPD members engaged in a foot pursuit with the suspect where a violent struggle ensued which resulted in one NWPD member being bit in the arm and another one being spat in the face. The suspect, a 29-year-old New Westminster resident, was taken into custody for the following offences:

Assault – contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada;

Assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm – contrary to section 270.01(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada; and

Obstructing a police officer – contrary to section 129 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

“It’s difficult to put my feelings into words knowing someone hurt my colleagues when they were just doing their job,” Stated Sergeant Sanjay Kumar. “This individual’s actions showed disregard for the safety of the victim and our members.”

The services of the Victim Assistance Unit were made available to the victim of the domestic assault.

The troubling incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, as the 23-year-old victim was leaving a coffee shop near Main and East Pender streets. The 35-year-old suspect is known to police. She was released from custody after agreeing to attend court at a later date.
