New West Police working on action plan in response to recent shooting

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 20 Apr, 2023 01:04 PM
  • New West Police working on action plan in response to recent shooting

New Westminster's police chief says his department is developing an "immediate plan of action" in response to a shooting on Tuesday in the downtown core, within a block of that city's courthouse.

One man was hurt and two people are in custody after police say a suspect approached a group, pulled out a gun and fired several times before fleeing.

Chief Dave Jansen says in a statement that, in light of other recent events in the downtown core, it's time to act because he says he's been told people feel unsafe in the area.

Police say the shooting happened on Alexander Street and they want to talk to anyone in the busy area who finds any evidence of the attack — or has surveillance video that might offer some clues.

The U.S. describes the program, which will allow ordinary Americans to privately sponsor refugees, as the boldest innovation in refugee resettlement in four decades. They also acknowledge that it borrows heavily from Canada, where citizens have been able to privately help resettle refugees since the 1970s.
