Police in New Westminster are looking for witnesses of an assault they believe may have been a targeted attack.

They say it happened near the intersection of Carnarvon Street and Alexander Street early yesterday.

The victim was taken to hospital with significant but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they believe two people armed with weapons are responsible for the assault and are canvassing the area for C-C-T-V footage of the suspects.

The Nelson Police Board said the two were on snowmobiles about 70 kilometres north of the city when they were engulfed. The Avalanche Canada website rated the avalanche risk at a three on its five-point scale, meaning the danger was "considerable."

On Sunday, officers were able to confirm that Amardip Rai was inside a residence in the 17400-block of 64 Avenue. The residence was secured and a Feeney warrant was sought to enter the residence and arrest Amardip Rai.

According to the victim, a black Hyundai sedan was driving closely behind him through the Massey Tunnel and both vehicles exited Hwy 99 on the Steveston Hwy off-ramp. The victim stated at this point, both he and the other driver stopped and exited their vehicles, which is when the driver of the Hyundai allegedly sprayed the victim with bear spray.
