New Contract In Hard Rock Casino Strike, Walk Out Continues At Gateway Casinos

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 23 Jul, 2018 11:54 AM
  • New Contract In Hard Rock Casino Strike, Walk Out Continues At Gateway Casinos
COQUITLAM, B.C. — Workers at the Hard Rock Casino in Metro Vancouver have voted in favour of a new contract, ending a 10-week strike.

More than 400 employees of the Coquitlam casino walked out on May 11 to back demands for improved wages and hours of work.

The employees are members of the BC Government and Service Employees Union.

A news release from the union says the workers joined the BCGEU May 2016 and have been trying to negotiate a first collective agreement with the casino since January 2017.

In the southern Interior, 675 BCGEU members at four Gateway casinos in Kelowna, Vernon, Kamloops and Penticton remain off the job in an unrelated strike after a second round of mediated talks broke down on Saturday.

The union says wages are a key sticking point for the workers, who have been on the picket line since June 29.
