New climate plan more detailed: Guilbeault

  • New climate plan more detailed: Guilbeault

OTTAWA - Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault will show Canadians this week how many greenhouse gas emissions every polluting sector in the country will have to cut if Canada is to hit its latest climate target by the end of the decade.

Under the Liberals' net-zero accountability law passed last year, Guilbeault has until Tuesday to table a new Emissions Reduction Plan in Parliament.

It's just the latest in a long list of climate plans Canada has created to hit ever-changing emissions targets, none of which it has met.

Guilbeault says this plan will be different because it is the most specific road map the government has produced.

Almost a year ago Canada increased its emissions goal for at least the fifth time, now aiming to cut emissions back to no more than 60 per cent of what they were in 2005.

Guilbeault says the plan will show existing policies, including carbon pricing and elimination of coal power, will get Canada very close, with sector-by-sector projections to find the most affordable ways to get all the way there.
