NDP Want Kathleen Wynne To Give Details Of Liberal MPPs Disciplined For Sexual Harassment

The Canadian Press, 04 May, 2016 11:16 AM
  • NDP Want Kathleen Wynne To Give Details Of Liberal MPPs Disciplined For Sexual Harassment
TORONTO — NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says Premier Kathleen Wynne should release details about two Liberal members of the Ontario legislature she had to discipline for sexual harassment.

Wynne admitted Tuesday that she has had to deal with MPPs because of a couple instances of sexual harassment, but she wouldn't say who they were or give the specific nature of the allegations.

Horwath understands the women who complained about inappropriate behaviour by unnamed Liberal MPPs requested they be dealt with privately, and says she doesn't want to see them revictimized because of public disclosure.

She says the premier should look at whether there needs to be greater disclosure around the complaints, saying Wynne "can't just put that stuff out there and then not address it."

Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown and Horwath accuse Wynne of a double standard for demanding Jack MacLaren be booted from the PC caucus for telling a crude, sexist joke about a Liberal MP Karen McCrimmon.

Horwath says some women in the NDP caucus complained in the past about "locker room talk" and sexual innuendo directed at them from other members of the legislature, issues she dealt with privately.

The premier's office says Wynne will have nothing more to say about the Liberal MPPs who she disciplined for sexual harassment.

Wynne proposed a Code of Conduct for members of the legislature after MacLaren got into trouble for his misogynistic joke about McCrimmon at a fundraising event.
