Museum of Surrey Launches Upcycled Art Contest for Kids, Youth

Darpan News Desk City of Surrey, 27 Nov, 2020 08:12 PM
  • Museum of Surrey Launches Upcycled Art Contest for Kids, Youth

It can be difficult to occupy young people during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Museum of Surrey has a sustainable solution – an upcycling art contest! Children and youth are encouraged to create art at home with old textiles for a chance to win a prize and the opportunity to have their masterpiece on display.

“The only rule is participants have to use existing materials instead of new ones, and most importantly, have fun!” said Museum of Surrey Curator Colleen Sharpe of the contest inspired by the new feature exhibit Nature's Clothesline.

To enter, post a photo of your child’s project to social media and hashtag it #MuseumOfSurrey and/or email it to museum@surrey.ca before December 11.

All participants will be invited to display their creations February 3 - 21, 2021. Projects will be judged in two categories (children up to age 12 and youth ages 13 to 18). Museum staff will shortlist final entries and then put the final decision to a vote on social media from December 14 - 16, 2020.

Prizes for each category are a $250 Native Shoes gift card for first place and a $100 Native Shoes gift card for second.

Free pre-registered, one-hour self-guided tours of the museum are available from Wednesday to Saturday. The museum follows all citywide COVID-19 safety protocols as per Health BC, City of Surrey and WorkSafe BC. Visit surrey.ca/museum for more details.
