Mounties Bring New Focus On Child Seats And School Zones For Back-To-School

Darpan News Desk, 29 Aug, 2019 07:28 PM

Mounties are working to make the 2019 back-to-school season the safest possible; in the first week alone, Coquitlam RCMP will visit more than a dozen school zones, enforce distracted driving, and start a locally-sourced child-seat campaign.

We’ve noticed a lot of children who are not being appropriately protected in vehicles.

That’s why on Saturday, September 7th we’re launching an education and enforcement campaign, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP.

We’re teaming up with ICBC, Child Passenger Safety Technicians, and our own Coquitlam RCMP enforcement officers and volunteers to spread the word at Town Centre Park. We’ll have everything you need to learn the best ways of keeping your children safe in a vehicle.

School zones will also be a big focus of the Coquitlam RCMP back-to-school effort. Beginning the week of September 3rd, teams of Mounties and SpeedWatch volunteers will visit at least 10 school zones throughout Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam to remind people that most school zones are 30 km/hr from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. More schools will be visited throughout the second week of school.

Traffic is always an important issue for people in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, but we’d like everyone to understand it’s not just ‘other people’ who are the problem, says Corporal McLaughlin. We could all improve. We’re encouraging drivers to bring their best driving behaviours for back-to-school and to be open to developing new and better habits in the future.
