An early morning fire has shut down an elementary school in the Metro Vancouver municipality of Surrey.
Surrey Fire Services say the fire, which has been knocked down, left some damage to the school’s walls but caused no injuries.
Rich Bodnark, assistant chief of operations with Surrey Fire Services, says a crew was dispatched to Cloverdale Traditional School at 7 a.m. Thursday and saw the exterior of the building ablaze before the fire advanced inside.
Bodnark says the interior fire was difficult to put out because of the school's heavy timber construction and the building's age, but the crew managed to extinguish it.
Seventeen firefighters and seven apparatus were on scene this morning and the school has been shut down for the day.
Surrey Fire Services says the cause of fire is under investigation.
