Montreal Imposes One-year Ban On Horse-Drawn Carriages Due To Safety Concerns

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 18 May, 2016 11:55 AM
Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre is announcing a one-year ban on the city's famous horse-drawn carriages.

Coderre said today the city will take the year to create new guidelines for the industry after a couple of accidents put into question the well-being of the animals.

Animal-welfare activists have long been calling for a ban on horse-drawn carriages and their pleas have been escalating since photographs circulated last summer on social media of a horse that slipped and fell after trotting on top of a metal plate.

A carriage horse was injured in April after it collided with a vehicle near Old Montreal.

Coderre says he's not satisfied with the way the popular tourist attractions are being managed and said he wants to create new rules governing the industry.

The ban takes effect on Tuesday.
