Montreal cabbie pleads not guilty to aggravated assault and other charges

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 27 Jan, 2015 10:54 AM

MONTREAL — A Montreal cab driver accused of running over a man in an incident widely shared on YouTube has pleaded not guilty to several charges.

Guercy Edmond is charged with hit and run, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and dangerous driving and entered the not-guilty pleas at the opening of his trial this morning.

The incident in April 2012 began over a disputed fare and quickly escalated into a physical altercation with a client.

Video evidence captured Edmond's cab being surrounded and attacked as he drove erratically around an intersection before the victim was run down.

The client ended up with a perforated bladder, broken ribs and a large cut on his chin.

The Crown says the actions were deliberate but Edmond's lawyer will argue he was afraid and didn't see the victim as he tried to get away from the group.

The trial before Quebec court Judge Genevieve Graton is scheduled to last four days.
