‘Mob Violence' In Surrey: 3 People Deported As Part Of RCMP Crackdown On Youth Violence

Darpan News Desk, 20 Nov, 2019 01:04 AM

Surrey RCMP tells that three people have been deported after investigations into at least two brawls captured on video in city's Newton area.

“In the last three months, two videos of assaults and other offences involving large groups of youths in the Newton area have circulated on social media, bringing forward safety concerns from residents and police,” said RCMP in a release.

“As a result of the investigation into the August incident in Strawberry Hills, three individuals have been deported from Canada, and the status of three other individuals is currently being reviewed.”

Police say their Diversity and Indigenous Peoples Unit was also working with local international student associations to provide education and prevention information.

“This on-going project has included an overt presence of Frontline and CRU officers, as well as regular patrols by Traffic Services and the Surrey Gang Enforcement Team,” said Surrey RCMP.

“While not all of these incidents involve international students, law enforcement officials want to remind individuals who are visiting Canada on a Visa that any engagement in criminal activity violates the condition of their Visa and they could be removed from Canada as a result,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Elenore Sturko in a media release.

Superintendent Shawn Gill, Community Services Officer with Surrey RCMP, is also urging residents and business owners to report any concerning activity

“While these incidents involving groups of youth are somewhat isolated, we are dealing with those responsible for these disturbances, and working to prevent further incidents from happening,” he said.

After the Remembrance Day fight, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum also issued a statement decrying the “repugnant” behaviour of the young men in video.

“I am deeply concerned that this kind of mob violence is happening with alarming frequency,” the statement read, also calling on the RCMP to take “immediate and strong action to get a handle on this kind of mob violence.”
