Mission, B.C., Residents In Shock After Flash Flood Surges Through 10 Homes

The Canadian Press, 23 Mar, 2015 10:20 AM

Mission, B.C., residents are dealing with the aftermath of a destructive flash flood that gushed through at least 10 homes.

The massive flood was triggered by heavy rainfall over the weekend that overflowed a culvert already clogged with debris.

Residents say the flooding was knee-high in some cases, causing extensive water damage and ruining valuable personal items.

Geoff Hackett says the water destroyed everything from wedding photos, to furniture, to his daughter's first Christmas toys.

Another resident, Darlene Biero, says she was afraid to go downstairs at the peak of the flood because the water was covering electrical outlets.

Mission's director of engineering Tracy Kyle says the district does monitor creeks and culverts, but was caught off guard by the amount of rain that fell in a short period of time. (CKNW)
