Minimum wage going up June 1st

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 28 May, 2024 01:43 PM
  • Minimum wage going up June 1st

B-C's minimum hourly wage is increasing to 17 dollars and 40 cents, up from 16.75.

The Labour Ministry says the 3.9 per cent increase kicks in on Saturday.

It says in a statement that the increase will help about 240-thousand workers in the province who currently earn less than 17.40 an hour.

The B-C government amended the Employment Standards Act in February so future increases to minimum wages happen automatically, based on the previous year's average inflation rate for the province.

Mayor of Delta, B.C., condemns lack of notification from FortisBC on odorous gas leak
The mayor of Delta, B.C., is calling the lack of communication from FortisBC "an egregious oversight" after the utility didn't notify the public for more than four hours after a leak at a renewable gas plant. George Harvie says on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that it was unacceptable for Delta residents and businesses to be "left in the dark" after a leak at a plant in Ladner.
